Chillicothe, Ohio
The progress continues in Chillicothe, Ohio for the K-2 and Intermediate 3-6 schools, home of the Chillicothe Cavaliers. Summit Construction partnered with Resource International for both projects.
The school projects consist of two buildings, the 79, 482 square-foot K-2 school on Cherry and Mill Streets, and the 121, 495 square-foot Intermediate 3-6 school located on Arch Street.
Ground breaking for the two future schools took place in late June 2017, and construction began soon after in July. We are now seven months into the projects and have been seeing these two buildings come to life.
Both schools are designed with an open concept layout, equipped with operable partitions throughout, including in the classrooms, gym and cafeteria area and gym and stage areas. Each floor of each building includes an ELA or extended learning area, where shared learning is encouraged. The school layouts, from the media centers to the reading rooms, classrooms and even staircases are cleverly designed with inspiring visuals and interchangeable words for teachers to use as learning tools.
We are honored to be part of a project that we are confident will have a tremendous educational impact on the children of the Chillicothe community.
Read on for an inside look of some of the progress from the last seven months.
K-2 building, Cherry and Mill Streets - Pictured here is the Southeast entrance of the Art and Administration wing. This entrance will lead into a corridor with a classroom to the right, and a large reading room up ahead. The “do not enter” sign is our very own vintage souvenir from the demolition of the pre- existing site.
Above is a panoramic view of the 1st grade floor in the K-2 building. The middle of this room is called the ELA or extended learning area, where there will be round tables, furniture pieces and shared learning tools throughout. The ELAs of each floor are surrounded by classrooms, project labs, and small group study rooms. Each classroom is equipped with large door openings and an operable partition in the center, giving the teachers the option to open both rooms and combine them into one large room. The open concept design is structured to encourage shared learning and to maximize efficiency and learning experiences designed by Chillicothe’s teaching staff. The third floor of the K-2 building houses second graders, where the floor plan shown here on the first-grade floor is mirrored.
Intermediate 3-6 school – Pictured above is the transformation of the second floor of the West wing for the Intermediate 3-6 school on Arch Street. -Progress display from top to bottom: late November 2017, mid-December and lastly, mid-February. In the middle of this space will lie the ELA or extended learning area and media center. The left and right side of this floor will house four classrooms each, totaling eight classrooms on this wing. This space will also include a teacher prep area. Through the opening, the hallway (as pictured next) leads into the center of the building, where project labs and contained learning areas are housed before the monumental staircase. This layout is mirrored in the East wing of the building, as it is also mirrored on all floors of the building.
Pictured here is the corridor leading to the center of the building, where the monumental staircase, rotunda ceiling, art room, media center and additional classrooms will be.
The center of the Intermediate 3-6 building is shown here, with the monumental staircase, rotunda ceiling and overlook. The overlook will be surrounded by an art room on the left and media center on the right, along with shared seating, furniture pieces and tables.
The transformation of the 3-6 building’s first floor of the East wing is pictured here in a progress grid. Photos taken by Assistant Site Superintendent David Gillespie over the course of 6 months from July 2017 until late January 2018.
