Cleveland, Ohio
On May 16th, sixth grade students from Urban Community School’s engineering club came straight from dismissal to their future squash court facility for some up-close construction and engineering education. The site is located on Lorain Avenue, just a couple minute walk from Urban Community School. Tom Gill, President of UCS, and Thomas Tompkins, math teacher at UCS accompanied the students at the event.
The learning experience began in Summit Construction’s site trailer, where Jason Winkler, President of SCC gave students a warm welcome and introduction to all the planning, work and people it takes to construct a building like Urban Squash Cleveland.
Soon after, superintendent for the project, John Labbe talked about blueprint reading, common obstacles faced in the process of construction, and even prompted the students with some challenging thinking questions.
The experience was rounded up in the squash court building, where the students asked questions about structures and materials they saw, and learned about some broad engineering and construction concepts.
Mr. Tompkins and Mr. Gill are planning on making another club visit to the site in a month, so the aspiring engineers can see the progress that has been made since.
